MEP Miguel Portas back to school

Communication among cultures is the main aim of the European Union, said Portuguese MEP Miguel Portas when he met the students of Escola EB 2,3 Manuel de Figueiredo in Torres Novas, Portugal, on 28 April.

In his visit to ninth year Portuguese students, Portas spoke about current topics such as European identity, multiculturalism and multilinguism and how these elements give meaning to the European motto “unity in diversity”. Stressing the importance of cultural diversity in the context of a complex and dynamic European citizenship, he addressed the different ways religions, ethnicities and languages contribute to a unique identity across Europe.

Intercultural communication means sharing and dealing with differences, becoming more tolerant and culturally richer. “Getting to know the others,” said Portas, “we better understand ourselves, and fostering this mutual understanding is the very first goal of the European Union”.

Portas also told the students about his personal experience as an MEP and his everyday activities at the European Parliament. As part of the “Back to School” campaign, which aims to trigger meetings between special guests and school students, the visit was an interesting opportunity to discover Europe’s current challenges.
