Europe Day in Cyprus

Celebrations and debates for Pallouriotissa Lyceum, Nicosia, in Cyprus, where Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou was the special speaker for Europe day.

Accompanied by Androulla Kaminara, head of the EU Representation to Cyprus and by Philippe Brunet, head of her Cabinet, Commissioner Vassiliou went back to her former high school on 8 May. The students presented a theatre performance with songs and poems, then a lively debate started, covering a wide range of topics, like the importance of learning foreign languages, the basic idea inspiring the Lifelong Learning Programme, and swine flu and its danger for humans.

Ms Vassiliou’s personal life story was also the focus of students’ questions: The Commissioner presented her own career at the European Commission and briefly explained the role played and the opportunities offered by the European Institutions.

A press conference followed the event. Ms Vassiliou underlined the importance of meeting young people to understand their views and together create a better Europe. With this purpose in mind, she invited the institutional world to embrace the “Back to School” initiative.
