Spring Day for Europe Debate at Polhemsgymnasiet, Sweden 02/07/2007 by: Agathe Djelalian
In Sweden, the Spring Day for Europe 2007 campaign was launched on 20 March in Gothenburg by Polhemsgymnasiet, an upper secondary school and the Swedish National Agency for School Improvement in the form of a debate in the presence of 150 pupils from Polhemsgymnasiet.
This year the Treaty of Rome celebrates its 50th anniversary. This celebration provides an opportunity to discuss what the European Union has accomplished so far and to intensify the debate about the future of Europe, the future that has to respond to the needs and expectations of young people.
During the debate at Polhemsgymnasiet, a panel consisting of representatives from all political parties in the Swedish Parliament, Riksdagen, debated current issues and the future of the European Union. The politicians were Magnus Jacobsson (KD), Joakim Olinder (M), Stein Ramstad (FP), Lise Nordin (MP), Kenneth Forslund (S), Hans Linde (V), and Eva Selin Lindgren (C). The audience was invited to take part by asking questions and adding to the debate.
The majority of the representatives considered the European Union to be a good tool for furthering peace and posing demands on both the member states as well as the candidate states. These demands are facilitating stable economies and showing concern for human rights as well as the environment. The political parties did, however, have different views on how cooperation within the EU could be improved.
