Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome

02/07/2007 by: Agathe Djelalian

On 25 March 1957, the Treaties of Rome establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) were signed, paving the way for what eventually became the European Union. Fifty years later, we are celebrating the anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.

The European Union has evolved: common institutions have been set-up, the number of Member States increased from 6 to 27, a single market implemented, etc. We are coming ever closer together.
As stated in the motto of the European Union, we are “united in diversity”!
While remaining diverse in culture, language and traditions, our unity is based on strong common values such as freedom, democracy and equality.

More specifically, what are the main achievements and the values we are celebrating?

  • The European Union is built on core shared values which are:
    - freedom
    - democracy
    - the rule of law
    - respect for human rights
    - equality.

  • Some successes including peace and stability, prosperity, and growth are unquestionable.
Fifty years without war between any of the countries of the EU is unprecedented in history. Enlargement from six to 27 countries is one of the reasons. The EU has at the same time become a force for peace in the world.

  • We are also celebrating many other achievements:
    - Travelling thanks to fewer frontiers
    - More opportunities for studying abroad
    - Paying in euros, a single currency shared by two thirds of the EU population
    - Being environmentally conscious
    - Increasing workers’ mobility
    - Fighting against discrimination and promoting gender equality
    - Having equal access to justice, freedom and security
    - Arising common interest to development.

  • What are our main challenges for the future?

    - Facing globalisation
    - Pushing a collaborative action to cope with global warming
    - Encouraging democracy and participation
